On August 6, 2026, Portland ranked as the city with the worst air quality in the world, with an average AQI of 160 by 7 a.m. that morning. More than 2 million acres had already burned across Oregon, and the season still had two months to run. If you were inside with the windows shut, you probably felt like you’d done everything right. Closing the windows is only the first step, and for most Portland homes, it’s not enough on its own.
We’ve been servicing HVAC systems in Portland since 1939, and smoke season has changed the questions homeowners ask us. They’re no longer just asking about heat pumps and AC tune-ups. They’re asking whether their furnace filter is actually doing anything, whether their air conditioner is pulling in outdoor smoke, and what it would take to protect their family when the air turns hazardous for days at a stretch. The answers depend on your specific system, your neighborhood, and how smoke moves through this city in ways that make Portland genuinely different from most places.
Here’s what we know, and what Portland homeowners should understand heading into wildfire smoke season.
Why Portland Gets Hit So Hard by Wildfire Smoke
Geography is a big part of the answer. The West Hills block incoming marine weather from the west. That system normally cleans Portland’s air. The Columbia River Gorge acts as a natural smoke funnel, channeling plumes from eastern Oregon fires directly into the metro area. The result is that two Oregon DEQ monitoring stations just a few miles apart can read very differently on the same morning, depending on where you sit relative to those terrain features.
Wildfire smoke is primarily composed of PM2.5 particulate matter, fine particles 2.5 microns or smaller. A human hair is about 70 microns in diameter. PM2.5 particles penetrate deep into the lungs and can enter the bloodstream, which is why health agencies treat them differently from ordinary dust. Oregon’s fire season typically runs through October, so this isn’t a brief annual event you can brace for and wait out. The August 2026 advisory covering Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties was the fourth Red Day restriction of that season alone.
What Wildfire Smoke Does to Your Indoor Air
A well-sealed home reduces smoke infiltration, but it doesn’t eliminate it. During sustained hazardous air quality events, fine particles find their way in through gaps around doors, windows, recessed lighting, and ductwork. The longer the outdoor event lasts, the more indoor concentrations climb, even in newer construction.
Wildfire smoke carries two distinct categories of indoor air quality hazard, and the distinction matters when you’re deciding how to address it.
- PM2.5 particles are the mechanically filterable component. A properly rated MERV filter in your HVAC system can capture a significant portion of these particles as air circulates through your system.
- Gaseous VOCs and odor compounds are the chemical component of smoke. Standard MERV-rated filters don’t touch these. Activated carbon filtration, which works through adsorption rather than mechanical capture, is what’s needed to address the gaseous side of wildfire smoke.
During active smoke events, small habits can make indoor air meaningfully worse. Running a gas stove, burning candles, and vacuuming with a non-HEPA-filtered vacuum all add to your indoor particulate load, which is exactly why Oregon DEQ and Multnomah County Health flag these behaviors in their guidance.
The Problem Nobody Talks About: When Smoke & Heat Arrive Together
Here’s the situation that standard HVAC guidance almost never addresses: what happens when a smoke advisory and a heat advisory arrive at the same time? It’s not a hypothetical. It’s a recurring pattern in Portland summers, and the standard guidance for each event directly conflicts with the other. Smoke says seal your home tight. Heat says find cool air.
For Portland homes with central air conditioning or a heat pump, there’s a straightforward resolution: run your system on the recirculate setting rather than fresh-air intake. Multnomah County Health explicitly recommends this during active smoke advisories. When your system recirculates, it pulls indoor air back through the filter and cools it rather than drawing in outdoor air. Your filter does real work. Your home stays cooler. You don’t have to choose.
For homes without air conditioning, overlapping smoke-and-heat events present genuine risk on both fronts. Oregon DEQ and Multnomah County maintain lists of cooling centers and clean-air shelters during these events; you can reach them by calling 211. How to Choose the Right Filter for Smoke Season
MERV 13 is the recognized threshold for meaningful PM2.5 reduction under ASHRAE Standard 52.2. At that rating, a filter captures 85% or more of particles in the 1- to 3-micron range, which covers the core of wildfire smoke particulates. Multnomah County Health recommends MERV 13 or higher during active smoke events, and we agree with that guidance.
There’s a catch, and it’s one that can damage your equipment if you ignore it. Higher-rated filters create more airflow resistance. Older HVAC systems may be designed for MERV 8 or lower, and installing a MERV 13 filter without confirming compatibility can restrict airflow enough to overstress the blower motor and cause premature failure. Before upgrading your filter rating, have a licensed technician verify that your system can handle the added load.
If your system can support it, the recommended combination for wildfire smoke is a MERV 13 mechanical filter paired with an activated carbon filter. The MERV filter handles the particles; the activated carbon handles the gaseous VOCs and smoke odor that a mechanical filter alone won’t address. Running your fan continuously during a smoke event, rather than only when heating or cooling is active, keeps air moving through the filter even when your system isn’t conditioning air.
Beyond the Filter: Whole-Home Air Filtration
Portable air cleaners can protect a single room reasonably well, but they can’t address contamination moving through your ductwork or treat air in rooms where the unit isn’t running. During a multi-day smoke event that affects every room in the house, that limitation matters.

Because of Portland’s terrain, a single reading from one station doesn’t always represent your neighborhood accurately. Checking two or three nearby monitoring points on the map is worth the extra thirty seconds, especially for homes in the corridor between the West Hills and the Gorge. A neighbor two miles away in a different microclimate may be seeing significantly different numbers.
Multnomah County residents can sign up for health department alerts directly through the county. Current Red Day mandatory wood-burning restrictions are posted at multco.us/woodsmokestatus. These restrictions matter for indoor air quality because wood-burning within the county during a smoke event compounds the particulate load your HVAC system is already working against. The fourth Red Day restriction of the 2026 season went into effect at noon on August 3, 2026, alongside burn bans from Portland Fire and Rescue and the Multnomah County Fire Defense Board.
Getting Ready Before the Next Smoke Event
The window between fire seasons is the easiest time to prepare. These steps are straightforward, but they’re much easier to take when the air outside isn’t already orange.
- Confirm your filter’s MERV rating and verify with a technician that your system can support MERV 13 if it isn’t already rated for it
- Stock a spare filter before smoke season arrives; during active events, filters sell out quickly at local hardware stores
- Download the OregonAIR app and bookmark aqi.oregon.gov so you have real-time data when you need it
- Check your system’s recirculate setting before you need it, not during an event when you’re under pressure
- Consider a whole-home system assessment if your current setup relies on a portable unit or a low-MERV filter alone
